The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a heavy rain alert across the country for the next seven days. The weather department said the monsoon will remain active in many parts of northwest, central and eastern India during this period.

Heavy showers are expected in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Besides, other states, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal are also expected to experience significant showers.

The Meteorological Department on Monday forecasted above normal rainfall in the country in July and asked officials and people in central India, Uttarakhand and Haryana to remain alert over the risk of floods. Rainfall is likely to be below normal in many areas of Northeast, eastern India and southern peninsular India.

IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mahapatra said during an online press conference that heavy rains are likely in central India and the adjoining southern peninsula. This includes eastern Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Vidarbha and adjoining areas of Telangana and parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

He said people living near rivers and waterbodies should exercise caution due to a rise in the levels of the reservoirs.

An alert for very heavy rain has been issued for 13 districts of Uttar Pradesh. Meteorologist Atul Kumar Singh said that on June 29, the monsoon became active in the entire country, including Uttar Pradesh. Under its influence, during the last 48 to 60 hours, light to moderate rainfall has been recorded in most parts of the state, while heavy, very heavy and extremely heavy rains have been recorded at some places.

Flash floods and landslides triggered by incessant rains have wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh. At least five persons lost their lives, while 16 were missing in 16 cloudbursts and three landslides across the state.

As per the state revenue department, cited by The Tribune, as many as 406 roads have been closed across the state. The state’s Meteorological Department said heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to continue across till July 7.
