Bengal News: In a fresh setback for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), more than 100 councillors resigned across the state following the humiliating defeat in the assembly polls. The councillors resigned after the newly elected BJP government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, launched a probe into the alleged corruption cases. The mass resignation is likely to damage the organisation, especially in the urban regions, a stronghold for the Mamata Banerjee-led party.

Earlier on Friday, 30 of the 35 councillors in the Bhatpara municipality submitted their resignation, sending a shockwave. Reba Raha, the party's chairperson in the region, also resigned along with the other councillors. Apart from this, 16 of the 23 councillors in nearby Halisahar Municipality also resigned from their posts on the same day.

While 14 councillors resigned from Kanchrapara Municipality, 18 of the party representatives stepped down in the Garulia Municipality. The party also witnessed 15 such resignations in North Barrackpore Municipality and 14 in Contai Municipality. The major shock came from Diamond Harbour Municipality, where eight councillors resigned. The region has been associated with TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee for a long time.

While the councillors have publicly resigned due to personal reasons, a detailed investigation has possibly frightened them, reported News18. Earlier, on May 20, the Bengal police arrested the councillor of Ward 34 in Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and chairman of Borough 5 over the allegations of threatening the local bus and auto operators. They have also been accused of collecting money from them, affecting their businesses.

The major opposition party in Bengal has been facing a crisis since its defeat in the assembly polls, as several of its MLAs have skipped key meetings called by party supremo Mamata Banerjee. Apart from this, some reports also suggest that a few MPs in the Lok Sabha have also shown dissatisfaction with the functioning of the TMC.
