West Nile Fever: Kerala Health authorities are on high alert after the emergence of West Nile fever cases in Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Thrissur districts. Ten people have been infected, with two deaths suspected to be linked to the virus pending official confirmation.

In response, the Kerala Health Department has issued an alert and outlined strategies to combat the spread of the West Nile disease. Measures include intensifying pre-monsoon cleaning activities, ramping up mosquito control efforts, and strengthening public awareness campaigns.

In a recent high-level meeting chaired by State Health Minister Veena George, directives were issued to intensify pre-monsoon cleaning activities and mosquito control efforts. District Medical Officers have been instructed to coordinate closely with local self-government bodies and district administrations to combat the resurgence of cases.

The District Vector Control Units are collecting and testing mosquito samples, while public awareness campaigns are being reinforced to educate residents about West Nile fever symptoms and the importance of maintaining clean surroundings.

What Is West Nile Fever?

West Nile fever is caused by a virus transmitted through bites from infected Culex mosquitoes. It mostly affects adults and was first identified in Uganda in 1937. Since 2011, sporadic cases have been reported in Kerala, with the first cases identified in the Alappuzha district. The virus is transmitted through bites from infected mosquitoes, primarily Culex species. Stagnant water serves as a breeding ground for these mosquitoes

West Nile Fever: Symptoms and Treatment

West Nile Fever symptoms include headache, fever, muscle aches, dizziness, and memory issues. While most infected individuals do not show symptoms, severe cases can lead to neurological damage and, rarely, death. Treatment for West Nile virus primarily involves symptom management since there is currently no specific vaccine or medication available. Early medical intervention plays a critical role in managing and recovering from the disease.

Preventive Measures

Preventing mosquito bites remains the most effective preventive measure for West Nile Fever. Residents are urged to wear protective clothing, use mosquito nets, apply repellents, and eliminate stagnant water sources. Public cooperation in reporting potential breeding sites and seeking immediate medical attention for symptoms is essential.

With the monsoon season approaching, collaborative efforts between health departments, local administrations, and residents are crucial in combating the spread of the disease.
