Suhas Shetty, a former Bajrang Dal member and the prime suspect in the Fazil murder case in Mangaluru, who was brutally killed by a group of unidentified assailants. The attack has sparked unrest throughout Dakshina Kannada, leading authorities to impose prohibitory orders and political leaders calling for a central investigation into the incident.
The attack took place around 8:27 p.m. near Kinnipadavu while Suhas Shetty was travelling with five others. Their vehicle was intercepted by two other cars, from which five to six armed assailants emerged and launched a violent assault using swords and other sharp weapons. Although Shetty was rushed to AJ Hospital. A case has been registered at the Bajpe Police Station, and multiple teams have been deployed to identify and apprehend the attackers, according to police reports.
Who is Suhas Shetty?
Suhas Shetty, 42, a former Bajrang Dal member, was often at the center of controversy in Karnataka’s coastal politics. A known rowdy-sheeter with five criminal cases against him, one in Dakshina Kannada and four in Mangaluru city. He was associated with Hindutva groups, particularly the Bajrang Dal.
Suhas Shetty gained national attention in 2022 when he was named as one of the prime accused in the murder of 23-year-old Mohammed Fazil, a Muslim youth from Mangalapete in Katipalla. Fazil’s killing occurred just two days after the murder of BJP youth leader Praveen Nettaru in Sullia and was widely perceived as a retaliatory act, further inflaming communal tensions along Karnataka’s coastal belt.
In response to Shetty’s killing, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNS). The orders, which ban public gatherings, protests, and the circulation of inflammatory content, will remain in force until May 6.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and other Hindu groups called for a bandh across Dakshina Kannada on Friday, leading to widespread shutdowns in areas such as Hampankatta, Surathkal, Ullal, and Puttur.
Incidents of stone pelting on KSRTC and private buses were reported, prompting transport authorities to suspend services to and from suburban regions. Following police advisories, liquor sales were also banned in sensitive areas as a precautionary measure.
