Swaraj Kaushal Death: Swaraj Kaushal, former Mizoram governor and husband of late union minister Sushma Swaraj, died on Thursday at the age of 73. The Delhi unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced the news of his death on X (formerly Twitter).
Several political leaders across the political spectrum, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paid tribute to Kaushal, who was cremated on Thursday evening at the Lodhi Road cremation ground. In a post on X, Kaushal Swaraj’s daughter, Bansuri Swaraj, paid tribute to her father, recalling his values and expressing her grief.

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj paid tribute to him, writing, “Papa Swaraj Kaushal ji, your affection, your discipline, your simplicity, your patriotism, and your boundless patience are the light of my life that will never dim. Your departure has descended upon me as the deepest pain of the heart, but the mind holds onto this belief that you have now reunited with Mother, in the presence of God, in eternal peace. Being your daughter is the greatest pride of my life, and your legacy, your values, and your blessings will be the foundation of every journey ahead.”

Who Was Swaraj Kaushal?
Swaraj Kaushal, born on July 12, 1952, was among the most senior criminal lawyers of the Supreme Court. After completing his studies at Delhi University and Punjab University, he began practising law. At the age of 34, he was designated a senior advocate by the Supreme Court, one of the youngest to receive the honour. He went on to serve as the Governor of Mizoram from 1990 to 1993, news agency PTI reported.
Kaushal also served as a Member of Parliament from 1998 to 2004, representing Haryana as a member of the Haryana Vikas Party. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1998 to 99 and from 2000 to 2004.
Early in his legal career, he rose to prominence by representing socialist leader George Fernandes in the Baroda dynamite case during the Emergency of 1975-77.
In 1975, Kaushal married Sushma Swaraj, the late BJP leader and former External Affairs Minister, who passed away from a cardiac arrest at AIIMS Delhi on August 6, 2019. The couple is now survived by their daughter, Bansuri Swaraj, a BJP Lok Sabha member from the New Delhi constituency.
Throughout his career, Kaushal was recognised as an expert on the Northeast region and its insurgency problems. According to a PTI report, he played a crucial role in the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord in 1986, which brought an end to two decades of insurgency, and was appointed the first Advocate General of Mizoram in 1987.
