Food and quick commerce deliveries across India may face major disruption on December 31 as delivery workers from leading platforms plan a nationwide strike. The action comes days after a Christmas Day walkout that affected deliveries in several cities.
Workers associated with platforms such as Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, Blinkit, Amazon and Flipkart are expected to participate in the protest.
Who Has Called The Strike?
The nationwide strike has been announced by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) along with the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT). Union leaders said delivery workers from metro cities as well as major tier-2 cities are likely to join the protest.

They said repeated strikes are meant to increase pressure on platform companies as working conditions in the gig economy continue to decline.
What Happened During The Christmas Day Walkout?
Union leaders claimed that nearly 40,000 delivery workers took part in the December 25 strike across the country. According to them, this led to delivery disruptions of around 50 to 60 per cent in several cities.
TGPWU founder and IFAT national general secretary Shaik Salauddin alleged that instead of addressing workers’ demands, companies attempted to weaken the strike by using third-party delivery services, offering temporary incentives and reactivating inactive delivery IDs.
“Our nationwide flash strike has exposed the reality of India’s gig economy. When delivery workers raise their voice, platform companies respond with ID blocking, threats, police intimidation, and algorithmic punishment. This is nothing but modern-day exploitation,” he said.
Why Are Workers Protesting?
Workers said they are protesting against falling earnings, long working hours and unsafe delivery targets. They also raised concerns over arbitrary ID blocking, lack of job security and the absence of social security benefits.
In a joint statement, the unions said delivery workers are denied basic protections despite being essential to last-mile deliveries, especially during festivals and peak demand periods.
Key Demands Of Delivery Workers
The unions have listed several demands, including an end to arbitrary ID blocking, improved safety measures, assured work allocation, reasonable working hours and mandatory rest breaks. They are also seeking health insurance, accident cover, pension benefits and a proper grievance redressal system.
Workers have urged both the Centre and state governments to step in and regulate platform-based companies to ensure fair and safe working conditions.
