India's COVID-19 tally tops 2.76 lakh-mark; death toll at 7,754; recoveries more than active cases for first time

New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: With 9,985 new cases reported in last 24 hours, the total toll of coronavirus cases in India reached 2,76,583 according to the data provided by the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday. The death also surged to 7,745 after 279 new deaths were recorded in the same span of time. 

Of the total 2,76,583 cases 1,33,632 are active cases while, 1,35,205 people have been cured and discharged from the hospitals across the country. This is the first the recoveries surpassed the active cases, since the first case was reported in the country. 

Among the Indian states, Maharashtra remains to be worst hit state with 90,787 cases and 3,289 deaths in the state so far. In Maharashtra, Mumbai is the worst hit city as the number of cases in the country's financial and entertainment capital crossed 51,000 on Tuesday while the death toll topped the 1,700-mark. With 51,100 confirmed COVID-19 cases, Mumbai now has around 700 more cases than Wuhan, where coronavirus first surfaced in December last year and later turned into the epicentre of the pandemic.

Tamil Nadu remains to be the second worst-hit state with 34,914 cases and 3017 fatalities so far. The rate of fatalities in the southern state is lower as compared to others in the list of top five worst-hit Indian states.

Whereas, the national capital, Delhi, with 31,309 cases and 905 deaths is the third worst affected state. The Delhi govt had on Tuesday said that they are expecting 5.5 lakh cases of coronavirus in Delhu alone by the end of July. On the fourth number remains Gujarat with 21,014 cases and 1,313 deaths in the western state so far.
