Zubeen Garg Death: The Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Thursday took musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami into custody for questioning in connection with the death of singer Zubeen Garg. Goswami was reportedly present on the Assamese singer’s yacht trip in Singapore.

The SIT also conducted separate raids at the residences of singer Zubeen Garg’s manager, Siddhartha Sharma, and the Northeast India Festival (NEIF) organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta.

Popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who gained fame with the song "Ya Ali" from the 2006 film Gangster, died last week in a swimming accident in Singapore. He was cremated with full state honours in Assam’s Kamrup district on Tuesday.

Assam Government Forms SIT To Probe Zubeen Garg’s Death

- The Assam government has formed a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Special DGP MP Gupta to probe Zubeen Garg’s death.

- As a part of the investigation, the SIT visited the residence of Garg’s manager, Siddhartha Sharma, in the Dhirenpara area. Finding the residence locked, the officials broke the lock in the presence of a magistrate before carrying out a search operation, news agency PTI reported.

- Residents of the building said that Garg’s manager’s mother, brother, and sister also lived in the apartment, but have not been seen since the singer’s death last week.

- Another team went to Mahanta’s Geetanagar residence, where no one from his family was present except for two helpers.

Protesters threw stones at the police vehicle outside Siddhartha Sharma’s apartment, prompting security forces to respond with a baton charge.

Assam CM Recommends CBI Inquiry If SIT Probe Found ‘Unsatisfactory’

Earlier in the day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the state government would recommend a CBI inquiry into Zubeen Garg’s death if the SIT investigation is deemed “unsatisfactory” at any point. He urged the public to trust the investigation and avoid spreading rumours on social media, warning that such misinformation could hamper the probe.

"Our stand is clear that we will uncover the truth of what happened that day by all possible means, and we will not compromise in this matter in any way," Sarma said.

Sarma further stated that the Assam SIT will interrogate those who accompanied Zubeen Garg to Singapore, including members of the Assam association and organisers of the NEIF. The Chief Minister assured that Shyamkanu Mahanta will be summoned and interrogated once his returns to Assam.

"We all love Zubeen equally, so let us allow the investigation to move forward in a steady, disciplined and transparent manner. We must remain alert and cautious against rumours and false information, as this will only divert the main issue of finding what exactly had happened," Sarma added.
