Women in Jharkhand may soon receive 35 per cent reservation in government jobs, similar to the policy implemented in Bihar. The state government is currently examining the proposal, according to a response submitted by the Personnel Department to a short-notice question raised by BJP MLA Shatrughan Mahto. However, the matter could not be taken up in the Assembly on Monday.
The Personnel Department’s reply states that under the Jharkhand Reservation of Vacancies in Posts and Services Act, 2001, women are currently provided 5 per cent horizontal reservation. In addition, several departments implement separate reservations for women in specific posts as required.

For example, 33 per cent of posts in both reserved and unreserved categories are reserved for women in recruitments for Jharkhand Police, Jail Warder (Kakshpal) and Excise Constable (Utpad Sipahi).
Similarly, 50 per cent of posts for Child Development Project Officers (Bal Vikas Pariyojana Padadhikari) are reserved for women.
The proposal for a uniform 35 per cent reservation is now under government consideration and may be tabled in the coming sessions.
