In a major step towards strengthening medical education in Jharkhand, the proposed Jharkhand Medical University will begin operations temporarily from the Panchayati Raj Institute (PRI) campus in Brambe, Ranchi.
Health Minister Dr Irfan Ansari and Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh inspected the site on Wednesday and reviewed the arrangements. Speaking during the visit, the minister said the PRI campus has adequate space to house the university temporarily. Of the institute’s 67 acres, 48 acres already have 45 buildings, including academic blocks, hostels, and halls, which will be used for the university’s initial operations. The state government is also in the process of identifying a separate site for a permanent campus.
The establishment of the university is expected to transform medical education and health services in the state. Over 500 health institutions, including medical colleges, hospitals, dental colleges, nursing, and paramedical institutions, will be affiliated, improving the availability of doctors and healthcare services for patients across Jharkhand.
The move comes as part of the government’s mission to expand medical services, following a historic budget announcement to open new medical colleges in six major cities of the state. Until now, Jharkhand’s medical colleges were affiliated with various regional universities, such as Ranchi University and Sidhu Kanhu Murmu University, leading to delays in examinations and results. The new university will have administrative and academic control over all medical colleges, centralising management and improving efficiency.
Describing the initiative as a milestone for Jharkhand, Health Minister Dr Ansari said the university will bring around 500 health institutions under a single umbrella, enhancing the quality of medical education and increasing the availability of doctors, especially in remote areas.
The establishment of Jharkhand Medical University is also a key step towards the state becoming self-reliant in health services, creating a centralised system for the smooth operation of new medical colleges and strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
