With only four and a half months left in the 2025-26 financial year, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has collected Rs 62 crore in holding tax against the annual target of Rs 98 crore. The market branch also faces a revenue target of Rs 16 crore. To boost collections, both departments have intensified action against major defaulters and begun issuing repeated notices.

In the first phase, RMC identified 500 major holding tax defaulters with dues exceeding Rs 10 lakh and issued notices directing them to clear outstanding payments. Notices have now been extended to defaulters owing less than Rs 10 lakh. Meanwhile, the market branch has served notices to major defaulters among 989 shop owners in the Eastern Circle (Bahubazar) and Western Circle (Upper Bazar), instructing them to pay pending dues.

Directives from the Additional Administrator: 

- Issue final notices to major defaulters and take strict action against non-payers.

- Launch an intensive drive to check trade licences; establishments without valid licences will face action.

- Speed up verification of re-assessments and new holdings.

RMC collected Rs 80.64 crore in holding tax during 2024-25, including Rs 91.45 lakh on the final day of the financial year. A total of Rs 80,64,37,113 was collected from 1,67,372 taxpayers. Of this, Rs 17,05,79,093 came through online payments, while 13,934 taxpayers deposited Rs 5,38,72,014 at the RMC and Doranda Circle offices. Tax collectors in 53 wards collected Rs 41,81,40,029 from 1,06,019 taxpayers.

Additionally, Rs 12,02,91,970 was collected as water tax, and Rs 2,16,38,840 from 18,370 applicants under trade licences.

Gautam Prasad Sahu, Deputy Administrator, Ranchi Municipal Corporation, said that with focused efforts and intensified recovery measures, the corporation is confident of meeting the revenue targets by the end of the financial year.
