1. Using Hot Oil

One of the most common hair care mistakes that we tend to practise is using hot oil to massage our hair instead of warm oil. Applying excessive hot oil to your scalp and hair can cause dandruff and itching. Whereas, warm oil not only nourishes the scalp by deep penetration but also increases the feelings of calmness and relaxation.

2. Keeping Oil Overnight

When you plan to oil your scalp, there is no need to keep your hair oil overnight. This practice can lead to skin issues such as acne, rashes, inflammation and many others. Therefore, one should always avoid keeping oil overnight and rather apply oil around two hours before shampooing your hair.

3. Applying Oil To Wet Hair

Due to hectic schedules, most of us try to keep our hair and skincare routine minimal and also tend to make some mistakes while following them. Applying oil to wet hair is one of them. One should always avoid hair oiling on wet hair as they are more prone to breakage and gentle pulling can also cause hair breakage.

4. Applying Too Much Oil

Always use minimal oil to massage your hair, do not overdo it. Just like applying moisturisers, hair oiling also needs to be done within a certain amount. Always remember that the more oil you use to massage your scalp, the more difficult it will be to wash it off.

5. Tying Hair Too Tight

If you are someone who ties their hair tightly in a rubber band after an oil massage, you should stop it right away as it puts unnecessary strain on your scalp, leading to breakage, damage and headache. Instead, you should tie your hair in a loose braid after you are done massaging.

Haircare Practices To Add To Your Regime

- Always use warm oil on your hair.

- Keep the oil for 2-3 hours, not overnight.

- Never apply oil to wet hair.

- Less is more. Don’t let the oil drip from your hair.

- Always comb and detangle your hair before oiling.

- Massage your hair lightly and don’t put pressure on it.

- Tie your hair in a loose braid after you are done massaging.
