Unhealthy Snacks For Gut: Our gut health is the epitome of our general well-being. ‘Gut microbiome’ refers to the microorganisms living in your intestines. Having bacteria in your gut can have numerous advantages for health such as it can reduce your risk of diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease and psoriatic arthritis. Apart from following a healthy lifestyle, the gut bacteria are also affected by the foods you eat.

Consuming unhealthy foods such as fried foods or packaged foods can lead to poor gut health that is associated with a high risk of several diseases. Therefore, one should eliminate certain foods and snacks from their diet that are harmful to the gut. Here is a list of common snacks that can have detrimental effects on your gut health.

Unhealthy Snacks For Gut

Candies

Candies are particularly high in sugar, which has the ability to destroy the balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut. This can lead to bloating, gas and gastrointestinal pain. Consuming too much candies can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria, leading to a health condition known as dysbiosis.

French Fries

French fries are one of the most common snacks that we binge on. They are typically high in salt and difficult-to-digest fats that can cause digestive problems like diarrhoea and bloating. Eating too many french fries can also increase harmful bacteria in the gut and can raise cholesterol levels.

Excessive intake can cause chronic health issues such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart diseases.

Pastries

Baked foods such as pastries are usually highly processed and contain lots of artificial sweeteners, refined flours, and flavour enhancers. The additives present in pastries and cakes are highly inflammatory to the digestive system and cause digestive problems.

Cookies

Cookies tend to be high in refined sugar and saturated fats which are considered unhealthy and can be a common risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Excessive sugar intake can disrupt the internal barrier, increasing gut permeability and causing profound gut microbiota dysbiosis, which results in a disturbance in mucosal immunity that enhances infection susceptibility, according to NIH.
