Science Behind Bioluminescence
Bioluminescence occurs due to the presence of certain microorganisms present in the water such as dinoflagellates and phytoplankton. These tiny organisms emit light as a defense mechanism when stirred by movement of the waves or footsteps. The light is produced by the chemical reaction of the enzyme luciferase and the molecule luciferin. When these microorganisms are disturbed, the reaction gets triggered, resulting in a beautiful, soft blue light that glows in the water.
