Signs Of Unhealthy Skin: Our skin is one of the most delicate parts of our body and requires constant care and attention. It is a clear window to what happens inside our body. From outdoor exposure to the foods we eat to our lifestyle habits, all put a strain on our skin and have detrimental effects on it. There are many prominent signs of unhealthy skin that most of us tend to ignore. Avoiding these issues can worsen the skin conditions and make the skin look aged and damaged. Here are some signs of unhealthy skin that you should not ignore and consult a dermatologist.
Signs Of Unhealthy Skin
1. Uneven Skin Texture
Having an uneven skin texture is one of the most common signs of unhealthy skin. Uneven skin texture or tone can be caused by various factors including acne, sun damage, ageing, weather changes and the build-up of dead skin cells. If you feel your skin is dry, it might be a sign of itchy or flaky skin. When rough patches form over your skin, it can be a result of buildup of dead skin cells.
2. Acne
Acne is the most common condition that takes place when hair follicles under the skin become clogged. The Mayo Clinic states that acne can cause whiteheads, blackheads or pimples and affects people of all ages. According to several studies, acne and blemishes occur at specific zones of the skin due to internal factors such as dehydration, blood pressure, poor digestive health and many others.
3. Dark Spots
Also known as hyperpigmentation, dark spots are usually caused by excessive sun exposure, acne scars or hormonal changes. The Mayo Clinic states that dark spots are a sign the skin has received a lot of sun exposure and are an attempt by your skin to protect itself from more sun damage.
4. Flaky Skin
Medically termed Xeroderma, dry skin or rough patches over the skin can make the skin feel and appear flaky. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), dry or flaky skin can be caused due to taking long, hot showers, living in a cold or dry environment, and dehydration among others.
5. Excessive Oily Skin
Another prominent sign of unhealthy skin is that should not be ignored. According to AAD, although oily skin can clog pores and lead to increased acne breakouts, oily skin also has many benefits. Oil helps preserve the skin, and people with oily skin tend to have thicker skin and fewer wrinkles. The key is to strike a balance between having too much oil and maintaining your skin's natural moisture.
