Foods To Avoid For Healthy Bones: It is important to maintain bone health for the body to function properly. With age, bones wear and tear and can cause excruciating pain. This is why building healthy bones is important for overall health and well-being. Adding healthy and nutritious foods can help strengthen one’s bone health. A good diet is the building block for healthy bones, but certain foods have detrimental effects on the bones. Here are certain foods that you should avoid for healthy bones.

Excessive Salt Intake

According to Harvard University, as sodium accumulates, the body holds onto water to dilute the sodium. This increases both the amount of fluid surrounding cells and the volume of blood in the bloodstream. Increased blood volume means more work for the heart and more pressure on blood vessels. Over time, the extra work and pressure can stiffen blood vessels, leading to high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. It can also lead to heart failure. There is some evidence that too much salt can damage the heart, aorta, and kidneys without increasing blood pressure and that it may be bad for bones, too.

Sugary Beverages

A diet high in sugar can cause calcium and vitamin D deficiency. According to NIH, overconsumption of sugar may also impair bone formation by causing high glucose levels in the blood. Moreover, hyperglycemia is associated with lower bone quality and density.

Caffeinated Beverages

Excessive consumption of caffeine may interfere with how the body absorbs, metabolises and eliminates calcium. This can lead to the weakening of bones. Therefore, always drink caffeinated beverages in limited amounts.

High Protein Diets

A diet rich in protein is extremely beneficial for bone health, but consuming too much protein from animal sources can cause calcium loss in the body. Therefore, always keep the protein amount moderate in your diet.

Acidic Foods

Acidic foods such as soda, or processed foods may cause bone mineral loss. The NIH states that acid-forming foods like those found in the modern diet cause osteoporosis and alkaline-forming foods or supplements prevent osteoporosis.

Alcohol

Excessive alcohol intake may interfere with the body’s ability to rebuild and strengthen bones. It may also inhibit the absorption of calcium, and vitamin D that support bone health.
