From an Ayurveda standpoint, hormonal imbalances are primarily linked to disturbances in the doshas, especially Kapha and Vata, as well as impaired Agni (digestive fire) and Ama (toxic build-up). Dr. Swetha S. Suvarna states, “PCOS is often seen as a Kapha-dominant condition marked by sluggish metabolism, weight gain, cyst formation, and irregular cycles.” Addressing these imbalances involves restoring Agni (digestive strength), detoxifying the system (shodhana), and stabilising reproductive tissues (Artava Upadhatu).

The journey towards healings begins with Nidana Parivarjana, or the elimination of causative factors, with primary emphasis on correcting diet and lifestyle. Inconsistent sleep patterns, particularly late nights and daytime sleeping, are significant disruptors of hormonal balance. Dr. Swetha S. Suvarna states, “A sedentary lifestyle further compounds the issue. Additionally, the stress of modern living, stemming from academic pressure, peer expectations, and the constant juggling of work and home responsibilities, contributes heavily to lifestyle disturbances.” From a dietary perspective, the frequent consumption of refined flour (maida), processed sugars, aerated beverages, and junk or packaged foods plays a central role in aggravating hormonal imbalances.

Restoring The Balance Through Panchakarma Chikitsa

When the imbalance in the doshas is minimal, it can often be corrected through Shamana Chikitsa—using appropriate diet (ahara), lifestyle modifications (vihara), and oral medications. Dr. Swetha S. Suvarna mentions, “However, in cases of more significant or deep-rooted imbalance, Shodhana Chikitsa through Panchakarma therapies such as Vamana (therapeutic emesis), Virechana (purgation), Basti (medicated enema), and Nasya (nasal therapy) may be required to restore dosha balance and support long-term healing.” In addition, incorporating stress-reducing yoga practices and pelvic floor strengthening exercises can significantly support long-term recovery and hormonal balance.
