The transition in seasons is leading to weather changes, causing people to fall sick suddenly. Known as seasonal flu, people of all age groups are suffering from ailments ranging from mild fevers to severe respiratory infection, while some are more vulnerable to it. Reportedly, more than half of Delhi-NCR families have been experiencing seasonal flu symptoms for over a month. As per a recent survey conducted by Local Circles, at least 54 percent of households have one or more members showing flu-like symptoms owing to seasonal change. To prevent yourself from falling sick due to a weather shift, it is important to practice some preventive measures.

Seasonal flu or influenza is a contagious respiratory infection that is caused by influenza viruses. It is usually spread through coughs, sneezes, and contaminated objects. Patients across Delhi-NCR are suffering from pneumonia, bronchitis, and other severe respiratory infections. Some of the common symptoms of seasonal flu include fever, coughing, headache, sore throat, runny nose and others. Moreover, people who have pre-existing comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, COPD, and cardiac diseases are susceptible to this flu. Although it is absolutely necessary to take advice from the doctor, with these five preventive measures, you can prevent yourself from falling sick to the seasonal flu.

Preventive Measures Against Seasonal Flu

Strengthen Immune System

Having a strong immune system can help fight seasonal flu. To ensure this, one must eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Include foods like citrus fruits, ginger, garlic, turmeric and green leafy vegetables to strengthen the natural immunity.

Proper Hygiene

It is important to practice good hygiene to prevent flu transmission. Wash hands frequently with soap and water, use alcohol-based sanitisers and avoid touching your face too often, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough fluid helps flush toxins from the body and keeps the respiratory tract clear. Incorporate herbal teas, warm soups and water-rich foods like cucumbers and oranges into the diet as they help in maintaining hydration levels.

Not getting sufficient sleep can make you prone to infections. It is important to ensure that you get a good night's sleep of at least seven to eight hours daily to allow the body to recover and fight off viruses effectively.

Avoid Crowded Places

It is better to avoid crowded places during peak flu seasons as viruses can spread quickly. If you have to visit any crowded place, make sure you wear a mask and maintain social distancing.
