Keeping a healthy weight is very important for the whole body, as it has a big impact on a lot of different parts of health. Obesity in particular can raise one's risk of getting chronic illnesses like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and several types of cancer. Also, it strains bones and joints, which can result in joint issues like osteoarthritis. Meanwhile, being overweight can have an impact on mental health by exacerbating anxiety and low self-esteem.
On the other hand, being underweight can result in nutritional shortages, weakened immunity, and poor reproductive health. A balanced weight can be attained through eating well and exercising frequently. This lowers the chance of developing chronic illnesses and enhances mood, energy, and overall health.

Dr. Vikas Jindal, who is a consultant in the Dept. of Gastroenterology at the CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, exclusively told Jagran English about Can Your Weight Influence Your Overall Health?
According to Dr. Vikas, "As the new year begins, many seek to shed holiday weight, but it's crucial to understand the long-term impacts of weight gain beyond just fitting into clothes. Addressing excess weight requires more than fleeting resolutions; it demands sustained lifestyle changes. The consequences of weight gain extend to various aspects of health."

Heart
One significant area affected is the heart. Excess weight often correlates with high cholesterol and blood pressure levels, contributing to heart disease. Lowering weight by 5 to 10 percent can notably improve heart health by enhancing blood flow and reducing cholesterol.
Joints
Weight gain also strains joints, increasing the risk of osteoarthritis, particularly in weight-bearing areas like the knees and hips. Shedding just 5 percent of body weight can alleviate pressure on joints, mitigating symptoms or preventing osteoarthritis development.
Diabetes
Additionally, weight gain is closely linked to type 2 diabetes, as it can lead to insulin resistance. Losing weight and increasing physical activity significantly lower the risk of developing or managing diabetes symptoms.

Body Mass Index
Monitoring body mass index (BMI) is crucial for assessing weight-related health risks. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy, while 25.0 to 29.9 indicates overweight, and anything above denotes obesity. Healthy weight loss entails gradual, steady progress—around 1-2 pounds per week—through realistic diet and exercise modifications.
Lifestyle Changes
Embracing small lifestyle changes fosters sustainable weight loss. The National Weight Control Registry highlights the benefits of significant weight loss, including improved physical health, energy levels, mood, and confidence.

At last, Dr. Vikas said, "Addressing weight gain isn't just about aesthetics; it's about safeguarding long-term health. Sustainable lifestyle changes, focusing on heart health, joint health, and diabetes prevention, can yield profound benefits, enhancing overall well-being and quality of life."
