Side Effects Of Flax Seeds: The high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and lignans make flax seeds a popular and nutrient-rich food that is frequently consumed for its possible health advantages. Consuming flax seeds, however, can have adverse effects on certain people, just like many natural compounds do. Gastrointestinal discomfort, which can manifest as symptoms like bloating, gas, and abdominal cramps, is a typical adverse effect.

The main reason for this is flax seeds high fiber content, which can be difficult for some digestive systems to handle, especially when ingested in large quantities. Start with modest portions and gradually increase intake while making sure you're properly hydrated to reduce negative effects.

Recently, in an exclusive conversation with Jagran English, Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head, South Zone, Dietetics, Nutrition, And Dietetics, Max Super Speciality Hospital, talked about the side effects of flax seeds.

The combination of flax seeds with prescription drugs is another potential negative effect. Lignans, which are found in flax seeds, may have physiological effects similar to those of estrogen. As a result, those who frequently consume flax seeds should use caution if they are also taking drugs that affect estrogen levels, such as hormone therapy or specific blood thinners.

Nutritionist Ritika said that flax seeds are an excellent source of dietary fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and phytoestrogens. But the recommendations are about 30g per day. Excess can lead to indigestion, leading to diarrhea, gas formation, and indigestion. Also, for patients who are on blood thinners, it is not advisable to take flax seeds. Flax seeds might slow blood clotting. Taking flax seeds along with medications like acitrom might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.

In addition to adding considerable amounts of flax seeds to their diet, people who are taking drugs should speak with their doctor to rule out any possible interactions or negative effects. As with any dietary item, moderation and personal tolerance are key factors in controlling any potential negative effects of flax seeds use.

She further added that many people are allergic to seeds, particularly flax seeds, so if someone gets rashes, loose motions, or inflammations, they should get a food allergy test done and then only take flax seeds. Also, as it's very high in fiber, don’t take it along with your medications, as it will inhibit the absorption of the drugs.

At last, Nutritionist Ritika said that "Flax seeds are very good for diabetics, helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and helps in weight loss too. Is excellent for women nearing menopause due to its phytoestrogen properties, provided taken in the right amount."
