The liver is one of the most essential organs in the human body as it helps in detoxification, digestion and metabolism. However, no matter how strong the liver is, constant exposure to toxic substances and some bad habits can weaken its ability to function properly. Maintaining good liver health is crucial as liver damage can lead to severe consequences. A compromised liver can cause fatigue, digestive issues and impaired detoxification while increasing the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, obesity and cancer. If left unaddressed, liver damage can progress to cirrhosis, liver failure or even liver cancer. Thus, it is important to know what can cause liver damage because most of the risk factors are modifiable.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Ajay Kumar, Chairman - Gastroenterology & Hepatology - Pan Max and HOD - BLK-Max Institute for Digestive & Liver Disease listed common risk factors for liver damage and how you can avoid them.
Risk Factors For Liver Damage
Excessive Alcohol Intake
Chronic alcohol consumption results in fatty liver, hepatitis or scarring of the liver which is known as cirrhosis. Avoid drinking alcohol and if you have to drink it, do so in moderate amounts.
Unhealthy Diet And Obesity
Obesity and a diet rich in sugars and processed fats lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Eat more fruits and vegetables to avoid overeating.
Lack Of Exercise
A sedentary lifestyle contributes to fat accumulation in the liver, increasing the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week.
Hepatitis B and C Infections
These viruses cause long-term inflammation of the liver which may not show symptoms in the initial stages. Get vaccinated for hepatitis B. Wash your hands frequently and avoid sharing needles.
Overuse Of Medications
Some medicines, such as acetaminophen (paracetamol) are dangerous to the liver when taken in large quantities or with alcohol. Always check labels, follow directions and consult a doctor before taking any other medication or using herbal remedies.
Exposure To Toxins
Substances like those found in pesticides, cleaning agents and industrial solvents are toxic to liver cells. When using chemicals, ensure that you wear gloves and ensure proper ventilation.
Smoking
Cigarette toxins not only raise oxidative stress but also exacerbate liver disease. Giving up smoking can also help to decrease inflammation in the liver and maintain the health of this important organ.
High Cholesterol Or Diabetes
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) refers to the build-up of fat in the liver which is associated with chronic inflammation in the body. Patients should undergo periodic health check-ups, maintain proper diet and adhere to the doctor’s prescription.
Unsafe Tattooing or Piercing
Non-sterile equipment can transmit hepatitis B or C. Go to licensed practitioners who employ fresh and clean equipment and observe high levels of hygiene.
Crash Dieting Or Rapid Weight Loss
The liver is overwhelmed by sudden fat breakdown which increases inflammation. Try to lose weight at a moderate rate of 1 to 2 pounds per week through lifestyle changes.
