Beyond the glitzy pandals, creative idols and sentimental ritual, Bengalis make the most use of the five-day festival with feasting on lavish Bengali dishes. From the bhog served to Goddess Durga to grand feasts enjoyed with family and friends, the food culture of Durga Puja celebrates Bengal's diverse legacy of flavours, textures and aroma. Like any other tradition, Durga Puja is incomplete without traditional Bengali dishes.
These Bengali dishes, which are typically made with seasonal produce and are age-old recipes, reflect both the elegance and simplicity of Bengali cuisine. Whether it is simple khichuri of the mandap bhog, Kosha mangsho or misti doi as a dessert, every dish has a story of reverence, culture and celebration.
Authentic Bengali Recipes For Durga Puja
Khichuri
It is one of the most popular dishes prepared for the bhog. This is comforting, made with rice, moong dal, veggies, ghee and spices.
Labra
Khichuri mostly seems incomplete with labra and beguni. Labra is referred to as mixed vegetable curry cooked with seasonal vegetables, lightly spiced and paired with khichuri.
Doi Maach
This is a quintessential Bengali dish and is prepared by rohu fish in curd and spice gravy. This, mixed with a sweet and spicy dish, tantalises the taste buds. Enjoy the tasty indulgence with hot steaming rice.
Cholar Dal
This is a curry made with Bengal gram dal tempered with coconut, raisins, and spices, which is usually paired with luchi.

Luchi
This is similar to puri and is a deep-fried, fluffy maida bread, which makes it an essential indulgence associated with Durga Puja.
Aloo Dum
This is also paired with luchi or basanti polao and is made with baby potatoes, cooked in a spicy, rich tomato-based gravy.
Aloo Poshto
This is a heavenly delight for all vegetarians. This is a simple recipe in which potato is cooked with poppy seeds and minimal spices.
Kosha Mangsho
Nothing can be the tradition of eating Kosha mangsho on Durga Puja. This is a mutton gravy that is mostly made with potatoes and slow-cooked with a whole lot of spices. It pairs excellently with basanti polao, luchi or steaming rice.

Basanti Pulao
Basanti pulao is one of the traditional foods that is a favourite of most Bengalis. This yellow rice pulao is loved for its sweet taste and pairs excellently with kosha mangsho or aloo dum.
Misti Doi
Misti doi is served as a dessert and is usually made with jaggery and gives it an earthy brown colour. Misti doi is also made using sugar, which is caramelised and then added to the milk.
