Knee pain is a common concern, especially during the summer months. Increased activity levels, warmer temperatures, and higher humidity can all exacerbate knee pain for various reasons. Summer often sees more outdoor activities like jogging, walking, and sports, which can strain the knees.
Moreover, higher temperatures can lead to dehydration, stiffening muscles and joints, and worsening knee discomfort. Changes in humidity and air pressure can also trigger flare-ups of knee pain in individuals with arthritis or other chronic conditions.
To alleviate knee discomfort in the summer, it's crucial to stay hydrated, maintain a healthy weight to reduce pressure on the knees, and incorporate low-impact exercises such as swimming or cycling into your routine.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Pramod Bhor, Director of Orthopedics and Robotic Joint Replacement Surgeon at Fortis Hospital in Vashi, shared knee pain relief tips for the summer season.

Did you know? Hot temperatures during the summer can affect your joints, leading to knee pain, which worsens as temperatures rise. Dr. Pramod shared essential tips to alleviate knee pain during the summer months.
According to Dr. Pramod, summer not only brings about issues like back pain, skin problems, eye discomfort, or gastrointestinal issues but can also exacerbate knee pain. Dehydration, caused by fluid loss, is a common culprit, leading to friction in the joints and increased pain during warm weather. Additionally, reduced stretching or exercise during hot weather, along with summer fatigue, can contribute to knee pain.

Lack of physical activity can increase the risk of knee pain and swelling. Tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue in the joints tend to expand and contract at high temperatures, leading to joint pain. Therefore, effective management techniques are crucial for knee pain relief.

- Stay hydrated by drinking enough water and consuming hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumber, tomatoes, oranges, and spinach.
- Avoid excessive strain on the knees to prevent injuries or swelling.
- Engage in daily exercise to strengthen muscles and joints, but consult a doctor before starting any new fitness regimen.
- Use the RICE method (rest, ice, compression, elevation) to alleviate knee pain resulting from minor injuries.
- Maintain a healthy weight by eating a balanced diet rich in fresh produce, whole grains, and legumes while avoiding processed and junk foods.
Lastly, Dr. Pramod recommends incorporating hot and cold therapy techniques, such as using ice packs or applying heat alongside medication, to provide relief for joint discomfort.
