As the monsoon has arrived, it is time to deck up our homes with remedies that can keep insects, bugs and mosquitoes away. The drizzling season makes us more prone to mosquito bites because of excessive humidity in the atmosphere which is a favourable environmental condition for them to breed on. Also, overgrown grasses and puddles contribute to the breeding of mosquitoes and insects in the rainy season. These mosquitoes can be dangerous to health as they can lead to various illnesses such as dengue, malaria and many others. Here are some natural home remedies that you can try to keep mosquitoes and pests away from your home.

1. Lavender

The lavender plant has analgesic, antifungal, and antiseptic qualities that keep pests and mosquitoes away. Lavender repels insects and mosquitoes and is known to be most effective for pest control.

How To Use: To use lavender to repel mosquitoes, you can simply mix some drops of lavender oil with 10 parts witch hazel and pour it into a spray bottle. Shake the mixture well and spray it cautiously over your clothes and around the house.

2. Cinnamon Oil

Cinnamon oil is one of the best mosquito repellents. According to the American Chemical Society, cinnamon oil is a great-smelling, environmentally friendly pesticide, with the ability to kill mosquito larvae. It is usually extracted from cinnamon bark and is widely used to make natural mosquito repellents.

How To Use: To make cinnamon insect repellent, take cinnamon powder and spread it in different parts of the house where mosquitoes and insects breed the most.

3. Camphor

Another widely effective home remedy to repel mosquitoes is camphor. Camphor or kapoor is found in every Indian household which helps in driving away mosquitoes and other pests. It emits a strong smell when burnt which works to keep the insects and mosquitoes away from your house.

How To Use: You can take one camphor tablet, place it in a bowl and keep it aside in one place in your room. It will leave a strong odour that will keep the pests away.

4. Bay Leaves

Bay leaves, also known as Tej patta can also be used as a mosquito repellent. They contain a pungent aroma that makes it difficult for the mosquitoes to breed in. It is also effective to treat insect bites or small bruises.

How To Use: One of the easiest ways to use bay leaves for repelling mosquitoes is by burning them in a bowl and letting the aroma spread in your house. But also make sure to keep your windows open to let the oxygen inside your house while the leaves burn.

5. Garlic

The strong smell that garlic possesses makes it a great mosquito repellent. It contains a compound named allicin, which works to drive away pests from the surroundings.

How To Use: To use garlic as a repellent, crush 4-5 garlic cloves, take a bowl and pour some water into it. Mix garlic cloves into the water and boil over low flame. Add some essential oils to the boiling water, after five minutes turn off the flame and let it cool down. Strain the liquid in a plastic bottle while strain out the garlic cloves from it.
