Taking precautions against heat stroke during the summer is essential for maintaining safety and good health. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, particularly if you plan to be outdoors or engage in physical activity. To shield yourself from the sun's rays, wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing, use high-SPF sunscreen to prevent sunburn, and cover up with a wide-brimmed hat.

Take regular breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas to cool off, and minimize outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day. Due to the rapid increase in temperatures, avoid vigorous exercise in extreme heat, and never leave children or pets unattended in parked cars.

In a discussion with Jagran English, Dr. Ranga Santhosh Kumar, a consultant general physician and diabetologist at Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad, provided insights into proactive measures to prevent heat stroke and safeguard health during the summer season.

What Is Heat Stroke?

According to Dr. Ranga, heat stroke is the most severe heat-related illness. It occurs when the body loses its ability to regulate temperature: body temperature rises rapidly, sweating mechanisms fail, and the body cannot cool down. Heat stroke can cause body temperatures to reach 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Without emergency treatment, heat stroke can lead to permanent disability or death.

What Proactive Measures Should Be Taken To Prevent Heat Stroke?

Wear appropriate clothing. Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting attire.

While electric fans may provide comfort, they are ineffective in preventing heat-related illnesses when temperatures are in the high 90s. Instead, take a cool shower or bath or seek refuge in an air-conditioned environment to cool down. Minimize stove and oven usage to maintain cooler indoor temperatures.

Limit outdoor activity to cooler times, such as early mornings or evenings. Take frequent breaks in shaded areas to allow your body to recover.

Never leave infants, children, or pets in parked cars, even with cracked windows.

Avoid consuming overly sugary or alcoholic beverages, as they can lead to increased fluid loss. Similarly, refrain from consuming very cold drinks, as they may cause stomach cramps.
