International Day For Biological Diversity 2023: History

The International Day for biological diversity has its roots in the history of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, also known as the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. During this conference, various world leaders recognised the urgent need to address the globally declining biodiversity. Therefore, several countries adopted the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on May 22, 1992.

The theme for International Day For Biological Diversity 2023 is “From Agreement to Action: Building Back Biodiversity.”

What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the measure of the number, variety and variability of living organisms. It includes diversity within species, between species, and among ecosystems. The concept also covers how this diversity changes from one location to another and over time. Indicators such as the number of species in a given area can help in monitoring certain aspects of biodiversity.

Biodiversity loss has negative effects on several aspects of human well-being, such as food security, vulnerability to natural disasters, energy security, and access to clean water and raw materials. It also affects human health, social relations, and freedom of choice. Society tends to have various competing goals.
