The history of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty dates back to the year 1987 when over a hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948, to honour the victims of extreme poverty and hunger. This special day is observed every year to promote awareness and measures to eradicate global poverty. On December 22, 1992, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 47/196 and declared October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

According to UNESCO, the sustainable fight against poverty requires the strengthening of individuals' capacities through education, science and support for a creative economy, which are sources of employment as well as pride and dignity. The yearly observance of this global campaign presents an opportunity to acknowledge the efforts and struggles of people living in poverty and help them achieve the basic needs of survival.

The theme for International Day For The Eradication Of Poverty 2023 is “Decent Work and Social Protection: Putting Dignity in Practice for All” and draws on first-hand testimonials showing that those trapped in extreme poverty often work long, gruelling hours in dangerous, unregulated conditions but still cannot earn enough income to adequately support themselves and their families, said United Nations.
