INTERNATIONAL Museum Day 2023 has been observed annually on May 18th since 1977. This day honors all the memorable events that have occurred within the global museum community. This entire week has a ton of planned events, and last year, about 37,000 museums from 158 different nations and territories took part in an organized event.

International Museum Day 2023 History And Significance

The International Council of Museums (ICOM), a group devoted to advancing the significance of museums in society, created International Museum Day (IMD) in 1977. It is observed annually on May 18 and strives to increase public understanding of the value of museums as cultural and educational institutions. IMD's importance and participation have increased over the years, with museums from many nations arranging special events, exhibitions, workshops, guided tours, and other activities to include the public and highlight the importance of museums in their communities.

IMD is commemorated annually with a particular topic that captures the current issues and objectives of the museum community. International Museum Day is a platform for promoting the social, cultural, and economic significance of museums in society. International Museum Day's 2018 theme is "Museums, Sustainability, and Well-Being." This theme highlights the critical role that museums can play in furthering the ideas of sustainability and well-being. In addition to this, the International Council of Museums' official website stated that museums are "uniquely positioned to create a cascading effect to foster positive change" and that they are "a key contributor to the well-being and sustainable development of our communities."
