JE Lifestyle Desk: On June 23, the world celebrates International Widow's Day, and the major focus of the celebration is to join and support all widows in order to raise awareness of the condition. There are many women who have all lost their spouses for various reasons, and they have to deal with long-term struggles merely to maintain their fundamental dignity and rights.

According to the United Nations, there are about 258 million widows worldwide, with one out of every ten widows living in extreme poverty. Poverty, violence, conflict-related conditions, and inheritance concerns are all key issues that all widows face.

Certain events and laws must also take place in order to cope with all of these scenarios and defend the basic rights of widows. With the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the United Nations has already made significant progress in this area. The United Nations also declared June 23 to be International Widow's Day in 2010.

The global body is more concerned with how the widow feels and what kind of care she requires. The day, according to the UN, is a call to action to secure full rights and recognition for widows. International Widow's Day emphasizes the need to raise the voices of all widows who experience adversity and discrimination on a daily basis all over the world.
