International Yoga Day 2023: History

International Yoga Day has been celebrated across the world annually on June 21 since 2015, following its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. The proposal was approved by around 175 member states. The proposal was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly, in which he said, “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition.”

Yoga is a mind-body practice that helps in building strength and flexibility. It helps in managing pain and reduces stress and feelings of anxiety. According to Healthline, yoga maintains that chakras are the centre points of energy, thoughts, feelings, and the physical body. While modern yoga focuses on poses designed to stimulate inner peace and physical energy. Ancient yoga did not place as much emphasis on fitness. Instead, it revolved around cultivating mental focus and expanding spiritual energy.

According to John Hopkins Medicine, slow movements and deep breathing in yoga can increase blood flow and warm up muscles, while holding a pose can build strength. The American College of Physicians recommends yoga as a first-line treatment for chronic low back pain. Regular yoga practice may reduce levels of stress and body-wide inflammation, contributing to healthier hearts.
