Embarking on the journey of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) can be both a hopeful and emotionally taxing experience. For many couples in India, IVF represents a powerful avenue toward parenthood after years of fertility struggles. While medical advancements have significantly increased the success rates of IVF treatments across the country, the emotional toll it takes often goes unspoken. From the stress of repeated procedures to the anxiety of uncertain outcomes, the emotional weight carried during this process is immense and yet rarely addressed with the same seriousness as physical health.
With India emerging as a hub for affordable and advanced fertility care, it is more important than ever to highlight the need for mental and emotional support throughout the process. Lack of communication and support from the family when opting for IVF often makes the journey emotionally burdensome. IVF is complex, with equal chances of success and failure. In some cases, couples go through multiple cycles, requiring immense resilience and hope. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr. Prachi Benara, Infertility Specialist, Birla Fertility and IVF, shares a guide to managing emotions during the IVF journey.
Emotional Journey To Navigate Through IVF
Dr. Prachi Benara shares, “We always advise couples that there is nothing unusual about conceiving through IVF. It's natural to become emotionally invested, but it’s important to stay calm and positive.” Mental well-being plays a crucial role in overall health and pregnancy. Some ways to navigate the journey include:
Supporting The Partner
Infertility isn’t just a woman’s issue, male factors contribute about 33 per cent of the time. Both partners should be equally involved and support each other throughout the journey, from screenings to procedures and aftercare.
Understanding The Procedure
Unawareness of the IVF process can cause stress. Understanding the steps and asking questions beforehand helps couples manage better.

Choosing The Right Fertility Centre
Look beyond success rates. A clinic’s transparency and holistic approach matter. The best clinics involve couples in every step, offer clear communication, and prioritise well-being.

Seeking Professional Help
Acknowledging stress is the first step to coping. Most clinics offer in-house counselling. Talking to professionals can ease anxiety and help navigate emotional lows.
Confiding In Family And Friends
IVF is simply a scientific way to help conception. There is no shame in it. Open conversations with loved ones not only offer support but also educate others. We’ve seen that women who are accompanied by family members, like their mother-in-law, feel more confident and relaxed.
Having Realistic Expectations
IVF is an advanced technology but not 100 per cent successful. The first-attempt success rate is 50–70 per cent. It may take one or more cycles, and couples should stay optimistic yet realistic.
Taking A Step Back
Infertility can stem from lifestyle, dietary, or medical factors. If cycles fail, take a break to reflect and heal. Use the time to rest, meditate, and improve overall well-being.
When trying to start a family with IVF, prioritizing physical and emotional health is vital. IVF is an emotional journey, but with proactive steps, couples can navigate it with greater ease.
