Japan Earthquake: A powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off northern Japan late on Monday, triggering warnings and evacuations across parts of the country. As per the report by the news agency AP, 23 people have been injured. Tsunami warnings were issued for Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate prefectures. Waves between 20cm and 50cm (7–18in) were recorded at several ports. Japan, located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world and on December 8 at 11:15 PM, the earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ocean, about 80 km off the coast of Aomori. For any earthquake-prone country, it is important to understand the risks and take proper precautions for residents and visitors for safety.

Preparedness extends beyond structural safety. It involves practical knowledge as well as supplies. While Japan’s technological advancement and strict building codes would significantly improve resiliency, individual awareness and preparedness still serve as a vital portion toward survival and post-disaster recovery. Here are the essential precautions and preparedness earthquake tips you must know for safety.

Earthquake Preparedness And Safety Checklist

Prepare An Emergency Kit

It is of utmost importance to prepare an emergency kit having water, non-perishable food items, a flashlight, batteries, a first-aid kit, and important documents. Having these items easily accessible can be crucial during the aftermath of an earthquake.

Secure Heavy Furniture

Anchor heavy furniture, appliances and fixtures to the walls to prevent them from toppling over during an earthquake. Use brackets, straps or other appropriate restraints to secure items like bookshelves, water heaters and large electronic devices.

Identify Safe Zones

Identify safe zones within your home, workplace, and community prior to preparing for any earthquake. These areas must be free from windows, heavy furniture and items that could pose a threat during an earthquake. Practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drills regularly to reinforce these safety measures.

Bolting The Foundation Of Building

If you’re living seismic zone like Japan, consider retrofitting your home's foundation. Bolting the foundation to the structure can prevent it from sliding off during an earthquake, thus providing additional stability.

Stay Informed And Alert

It is important to keep yourself informed about earthquake risks and updates in your region. Follow local news, have a weather radio or use smartphone apps that provide real-time seismic activity information. Being aware of potential threats allows for better preparation.

Emergency Plan And Contacts

Develop a comprehensive family emergency plan that includes communication strategies, meeting points and evacuation routes. Make sure that every family member is aware of the plan and practices. Keep a list of emergency contacts, including local authorities, medical professionals, as well as neighbours. Share this information with every family member.

Prevent Gas Leaks

Install a gas shut-off valve to prevent gas leaks during an earthquake. If you can smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off the gas supply immediately or contact professionals for assistance.
