Sleep is one of the most important building blocks of healthy life and well-being. Sleep plays a pivotal role in developing good health and a healthy lifestyle. A good night's sleep improves your brain performance, mood and health. According to the National Institutes of Health, good sleep improves your brain performance, mood, and health. Not getting enough quality sleep regularly raises the risk of many diseases and disorders. These range from heart disease and stroke to obesity and dementia. There's more to good sleep than just the hours spent in bed. Furthermore, bad or poor sleep can also have a wide variety of negative effects on our skin. Here’s a list of how poor sleep affects our skin health.
Ways In Which Poor Sleep Can Affect Your Skin
1. Breakouts
Sleep deprivation is known as one of the major triggers of skin problems. Lack of sleep can cause stress, which can lead to increased levels of cortisol in the body. The spike in cortisol levels can lead to inflammation and increased production of sebum, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.
2. Acne
According to the National Institutes of Health, there is a strong positive correlation between acne and fatigue upon waking. Several studies suggest that unhealthy sleeping patterns and habits can be a large contributor to triggering insulin resistance, increasing stress, spiking cortisol levels, and impacting hormones that are typically associated with acne.
3. Puffy Eyes
Getting too little or no sleep can cause irritation or puffiness in the eyes. According to the Sleep Education Organisation, much like the brain and the body, your eyes heal themselves as you sleep. Not getting enough sleep can lead to having dry, itchy, or bloodshot eyes. The eyes may produce fewer tears after a night of insufficient sleep. This can open the door to eye infections.
4. Paler Skin
Less or no sleep not only affects the body negatively but also affects the moisture levels in your skin. As per health experts, if you are tired from lack of sleep, then it can cause your blood circulation to work less efficiently. This results in lower oxygen levels in the blood which can further make your skin appear blotchy, pigmented and pale.
