New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: A leap year is observed in every four years and contains 366 days. The extra day is added in the month of February, making it a 29-day month. Leap years are also known as 'bissextile years'.
A leap year is simply that calendar year which is an extra day longer. Unlike the normal year, a leap year has 366 days, with 29 days in the month of February.
The leap year comes every four years and adds a day in the month of February as it is a corrective measure that keeps our calendar year in sync with the astronomical or the seasonal calendar. The reason behind the addition of one day is because the Earth takes slightly longer than 365 days to orbit the sun, 365.242189 days to be precise. Adding .242189 four times, it roughly makes 1 day thus adding a day in a year.
Now the biggest question is how can anyone find out which year is the leap year or not? And the answer is really simple, you just have to do a bit of mathematics to know which year is the leap year.
Leap year calculator
Through this calculator, you can simply find which year is the leap year. To know this, first, you have to divide that year by four. After the division, if your remainder comes zero, then that year is the leap year. If the remainder is not zero, then that year will not be a leap year.
For example, if you divide the year 2020 by 4, the quotient will come as 505 and the remainder will come as zero. Hence, the year 2020 is a leap year. Before 2020, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 were also leap years.
Leap year list
Now if we want to find out about the leap year till 2050, then use the rule of dividing by 4. We all know that the year 2020 is a leap year. Now if we want to know about the years between 2021 and 2050, then the year 2021 to 2050 has to be divided by 4. The year in which the remainder will be zero, that year will be the leap year. In the coming years, there will be 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040, 2044 and 2048 will be leap years.
Leap year calendar
Let us see how many leap years are there between the years 2000 to 2100 i.e. 100 years. If we divide the years with then we will come to the conclusion that there will be 25 leap years in this century.
