Lohri in the year 2026 offers cheer with bonfires, feasts, and merriments, but the heavy smoke from wood and stubble, the chilliness in January and celebrations can make your skin behave very badly. Lohri 2026 falls on January 13, and people are gearing up to celebrate the Punjabi harvest festival with pomp and fervour. However, dry winter weather in North India, especially during Lohri, dehydrates the protective skin barrier, resulting in dullness, flakiness or sensitive skin. Thus, it is important to start protecting the skin from the bonfire smoke, cold and festive stress.

As Lohri 2026 is almost here, stocking up on ways to shield your skin against the three villains will help you light up your Lohri with confidence and radiance. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr. Rupika Singh, MBBS, MD, Dermatologist and Founder of Akiya Aesthetics, shares Lohri skincare tips for bright and radiant skin.

Lohri 2026 Skincare Tips

Be Mindful Around The Bonfire - Bonfires are central to Lohri celebrations, but prolonged exposure to heat and smoke can dehydrate the skin and worsen conditions like eczema, rosacea, and acne. Heat dilates blood vessels, leading to redness and sensitivity, while smoke particles can clog pores. Try to maintain a safe distance from the fire and avoid standing too close for long periods. Once you’re home, cleanse your face gently to remove soot and pollutants before they settle into the skin.

Moisturiser Is Non-Negotiable Even At Night - Skin’s natural sebum levels get disrupted due to the cold air of winter weather, accompanied by heat from indoor heating systems. This makes the skin look tight, flaky and itchy. Choose a ceramide-based or hyaluronic acid-enriched moisturiser that strengthens the skin barrier. For those with very dry skin, sealing in moisture with a light facial oil at night can prevent transepidermal water loss and keep the skin supple.

Sunscreen Is A Must Even In Winters - One of the most prevalent misconceptions in winters is that you don’t need sunscreen during cold months and even during cold Lohri day. Though Lohri celebrations mostly begin at night, most gatherings start during late afternoon, when the sun's UV rays can reach your skin. Staying outdoors for long periods exposes your skin to UV rays and this can be prevented by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Sunscreen prevents pigmentation and premature ageing.

Watch Your Diet And Drinks You Consume - Festive foods occupy an integral role in Lohri celebrations but excessive consumption of sugary and fried foods triggers acne and inflammation. Have sweet delicacies in moderation and add skin-friendly foods rich in antioxidants in the diet too, such as fruits, nuts, seeds, etc. Also make conscious efforts to sip water throughout the day as water consumption keeps the skin elastic and glowing.

Don’t Experiment With New Skincare - There is no need to experiment with new products or DIY’s during festivities, as skin is already prone to sensitivity in winter. On top of it, new experiments can trigger breakouts or allergic reactions. Follow a simple routine of cleansing, moisturization and protection.

Lohri is the festival of physical and emotional warmth and care. By opting for a few preventive skincare measures, you can keep your skin healthy, glowing and shining even during celebrations. Glowing skin is the best accessory your look deserves this winter.
