The Met Gala, one of the biggest fashion events has finally taken place in New York on May 6, 2025 and the star-studded night was a spectacular display of glamour, style and sophistication on the iconic blue carpet. This year's theme, 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,' unveiled on October 9, 2024, promises to be a game-changer. Centred on the Black dandy, the exhibit will delve into the impact of clothing and style on Black identities across the Atlantic diaspora while drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller's book 'Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.'

With its focus on Black style and sartorial storytelling, this year's Met Gala is expected to be a celebration of individuality, identity and craftsmanship. Let's understand what black dandyism means.

What Is Black Dandyism?

Black Dandyism originated in the 18th and 19th centuries as a response to societal constraints, evolving into an identity of resistance. Through fashion, African Americans expressed their autonomy, defied societal expectations and proudly honoured their rich cultural legacy. This movement was characterised by elegant attire including tailored suits, bold patterns and accessories like hats, pocket squares and bow ties. Through fashion, Black dandies made a statement while expressing their unique identity and resisting marginalisation. Their stylish ensembles continue to inspire, symbolising self-expression, cultural pride and resilience. Thus, the term 'Black Dandy' was used to describe men devoted to aesthetics, embracing it as a lifestyle, attitude and self-assurance. For Blacks, it was a positive affirmation of their people and ambitions. However, when used by whites, the term took on a negative connotation, ridiculing Blacks for aspiring to refinement and sophistication.

Ms. Miller describes Black dandyism as “a strategy and a tool to rethink identity, to reimagine the self in a different context. To really push a boundary—especially during the time of enslavement, to really push a boundary on who and what counts as human, even.”

According to the reports, the event will explore the Black dandy identity through twelve defining traits inspired by Zora Neale Hurston's 1934 essay. The journey begins with 'Ownership,' a poignant display of belongings from a 19th-century enslaved individual from Maryland. Then it will also showcase influential work by Black designers including Pharrell Williams, Louis Vuitton's Men's Creative Director and Virgil Abloh, founder of Off-White. Other iconic style-makers will also be featured, highlighting their contributions to modern menswear. By centring on Black designers, the exhibition celebrates Black style as a driving force behind menswear innovations, redefining the fashion narrative.
