The monsoon brings much-needed relief from the summer heat but it also raises some tricky questions when it comes to skin and hair care. Does humid weather mean you should skip moisturiser? And how often should you wash your hair when it feels greasy almost every day? In a conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr. Amit Bangia, Associate Director- Dermatologist, Asian Hospital explained the role of moisturiser during the rainy season.

Moisturisation On Skin

She said, many people assume they don’t need a moisturiser in the monsoon because their skin feels sweaty or sticky. But skipping moisturiser can actually worsen issues like dryness, irritation or even acne. The doctor explains that the skin still loses water internally, a process known as transepidermal water loss, regardless of how moist the environment feels.

What’s the fix? Switch to lightweight, water-based or gel-based moisturisers instead of heavy creams. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid or niacinamide. They hydrate the skin without clogging pores or feeling greasy.

Hair Washing Habits- More Isn’t Always Better

With all the sweat, rain and pollution, washing your hair frequently might feel necessary but experts caution against overdoing it. Washing your hair every day during monsoon can strip the scalp of natural oils, leading to dryness, increased hair breakage and even dandruff. The doctor recommends washing hair two to three times a week, depending on individual needs and using a mild, sulfate-free shampoo. If your scalp feels oily between washes, use a dry shampoo or rinse with plain water without shampooing again.

Also, avoid tying wet hair tightly or leaving it damp for long periods. That creates the perfect environment for fungal infections and hair fall.

The monsoon may bring its own set of skin and hair challenges, but they’re manageable with minor adjustments to your routine. Stick to lightweight moisturisers, hydrate adequately and be gentle with your hair. Monsoon care isn’t about doing more it’s about doing better and smarter.
