World Breastfeeding Week is observed annually from August 1 to 7 to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and supporting breastfeeding mothers. It was initiated by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) in 1992 to improve breastfeeding rates and practises worldwide.

As simple as it may sound, breastfeeding never comes easy on new mothers. Breastfeeding is an optimal method to feed infants and has several benefits for the mother and baby. According to the CDC, it helps protect babies against some short- and long-term illnesses and diseases. Breastfed babies have a lower risk of asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Breastfed babies are also less likely to have ear infections and stomach bugs.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Sushil Kumar Singla, Consulting Paediatrician for Hans Paediatric Program with The Hans Foundation listed some common breastfeeding challenges that new mothers face. He said, “The early days of breastfeeding are a period of new learning each day. However, with proper guidance and support, many common challenges can be addressed.”

Common Breastfeeding Challenges

Sore Nipples

This is a common issue, often due to improper latch or excessive friction. Ensure your baby's mouth covers both the nipple and areola. Lanolin cream can provide relief. If the pain persists or worsens, you must report the same to your doctor.

Engorgement

This occurs when breasts become overly full and tender. Frequent feeding, warm compresses before feeding, and cold compresses after can help. If severe, expressing a small amount of milk can provide relief.

Low Milk Supply

While it's common to worry about milk supply, most women produce enough than the baby's requirement. Frequent breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact, and ensuring proper latch can help stimulate milk production.

Mastitis

This is a breast infection characterised by pain, redness, and fever. It often occurs due to clogged milk ducts. Frequent breastfeeding, warm compresses, and over-the-counter pain relievers can help.
