Ramadan 2025 is just around the corner, and this holy month holds immense significance for the followers of Islam. Observing a fast from sunrise to sunset is an essential aspect of Ramadan as it is one of the 'Five Pillars of Islam.' The importance of Ramadan lies in its emphasis on self-discipline, self-control, universal brotherhood and nurturing empathy towards the less privileged. During this sacred month, Muslims strive to develop a stronger connection with Allah and cultivate a sense of compassion and kindness towards others.

As Ramadan approaches, Muslims around the world prepare themselves for a month of spiritual reflection, self-improvement and devotion to their faith but one must follow a set of certain rules during Ramzan. Here, we've compiled some do's and don'ts that every Muslim should abide by while observing fast.

Do's:

1. During Ramadan, Muslims are expected to read the Holy Quran while reflecting on its teachings and guidance to strengthen their faith and connection with Allah.

2. Prayers must be observed five times a day, starting with Fajr at dawn followed by Zhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and concluding with Isha at night to maintain a strong spiritual connection.

3. Reach out to those in need while offering kindness, support and generosity as Ramadan encourages compassion, brotherhood and charitable giving to foster a sense of community and empathy.

4. Offer Zakat, a percentage of your wealth to charitable causes, demonstrating your commitment to social responsibility, justice and the well-being of others.

5. Muslims are encouraged to maintain celibacy throughout Ramadan, engaging in prayers and spiritual reflection to strengthen their bond with Allah.

Don'ts:

1. Abstain from drinking and eating between sunrise and sunset as this is the fundamental aspect of fasting during Ramadan and is obligatory for all Muslims, except for those who are ill, pregnant, breastfeeding and menstruating women.

2. Refrain from harbouring feelings of hatred, bitterness or anger as these negative emotions can nullify the fast and instead focus on cultivating compassion, empathy and kindness during Ramadan.

3. Pregnant, breastfeeding or menstruating women as well as the elderly and those with illnesses should not fast and they can compensate for missed fasts later.

4. Refrain from consuming alcohol, smoking or forcefully vomiting as these actions invalidate the fast and are considered contrary to the spirit of Ramadan which emphasises self-control and devotion.

5. Avoid missing prayers or delaying the breaking of the fast as these actions can detract from the spiritual significance of Ramadan.
