Raw Silk vs Art Silk: A wardrobe seems to be incomplete without the inclusion of silk fabric. Be it any occasion, wearing an outfit made of silk elevates the overall look. However, in the fabric market, there are two types of silk fabrics that exist, namely, raw silk and art silk. These two popular silk fabrics are the common terms that are used when you’re planning to buy silk fabrics. Even though these two fabrics look somewhat similar at first glance, their difference lies in quality, texture, durability and price. Unless you’re a textile expert, you will not be able to spot the difference between raw silk and art silk.

Raw Silk vs Art Silk: What’s The Difference?

Raw silk is a less polished form of traditional silk. It is derived from real silkworms but doesn’t go through much processing. Owing to this nature, raw silk appears to be a bit coarse to the touch. It has a more earthy and matte look. 

Art silk, as the name suggests, is made of synthetic fibres like rayon and polyester. It looks somewhat similar to the real silk but has a more shiny, smooth and glamorous look. It can feel the difference on touching it or wearing it.

Appearance

Raw silk is natural and thus, it gives an uneven shine. Art silk, which is man-made, is usually uniformly glossy in appearance. 

Touch Test

Raw silk on touching, feels rich and organic. It feels a little grainy, which is extremely noticeable to the touch. However, art silk looks much glossier and feels extremely smooth and silky upon touching.

Airflow Test

Raw silk is usually natural and breathable. On the other hand, art silk is not as breathable as raw silk and can feel warm or sticky on the body due to its artificial fabric.

Price Check

Being natural, raw silk is extremely valuable and costly. This silk also carries an authenticity mark that proves its value. Meanwhile, art silk is a glossier, sleeker and budget-friendly fabric.
