Samantha Ruth Prabhu, in 2024, was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called myositis. She revealed that she follows a strict anti-inflammatory diet as she underwent a drastic weight loss owing to her condition. According to Harvard Health, one of the important steps to manage inflammation through diet is to cut out heavily processed foods. These include convenience foods such as instant meals, precooked meats like sausages and chicken nuggets, powdered soup mixes, boxed baked desserts, sugary breakfast cereals, cured deli meat, commercial biscuits, and ready-made sauces. These items are loaded with preservatives, refined sugars, unhealthy fats and artificial additives that can stir up inflammation within the body.

Moreover, Samantha follows an anti-inflammatory diet that restricts eating refined grain-based foods like white bread, traditional boxed cereals, white-flour pasta and polished white rice. As these products have been stripped of their natural fibre and nutrients, they cause rapid spikes in blood sugar, thus fuelling chronic inflammation.

There are other items as well that cause inflammation and are avoided by the South Indian actress. These include sugary beverages like sodas and commercial fruit juices, packaged cookies and pastries, butter, cheese and full-fat ice cream. Avoid foods that are marketed as healthy, such as coconut-based products and store-bought salad dressings, as they often contain hidden sugars and saturated fats that can undermine your anti-inflammatory efforts. Also, processed meats like bacon, pepperoni, ham and salami are known to aggravate inflammation due to their high sodium, preservative and saturated fat content.

To combat inflammation, it is important to incorporate nourishing foods in their most natural state. Samantha aims for a diet that is rich in whole, unprocessed ingredients without added sugars or artificial elements. Choose a vibrant variety of fresh fruits and colourful vegetables, hearty whole grains like oats, brown rice, and quinoa and plant-based proteins such as beans, peas and lentils. Include lean animal proteins like grilled chicken or fish and healthy fats from nuts, seeds and extra virgin olive oil. A small amount of low-fat dairy can be included if tolerated.

The whole-foods approach not only reduces inflammation but also supports overall health, energy levels, gives glowing skin and prevents  long-term diseases. Replacing ultra-processed items with nutrient-dense alternatives helps restore balance in the body and promotes immune system.
