JE Lifestyle Desk: Sawan or Shravan Maas is one of the most auspicious months in the Hindu calendar. In the Purnimant calendar, usually followed by North Indian states, the Shravan month starts fifteen days before the Amanta calendar. The Sawan month in India is also related to the monsoon arrives in the country. The commencement of the monsoon is considered auspicious for agriculture and harvest and is considered a good sign of Lord Shiva.

Shravan month is known as Sawan in the Northern states of India. Each Monday that falls during this period is considered highly auspicious for fasting and seeking the blessings of the deity. However, during this month there are some things that devotees should keep in mind while worshipping Lord Shiva. Here are some do’s and don’ts that you should keep in mind during Shravan month. 

Sawan 2023: Do’s

Firstly, the devotees should take a Sankalp that will observe the fast with utmost sincerity and devotion. 

The devotees should wake up early in the morning.

Devotees should take a bath and then clean the house.

You can sprinkle some Ganga Jal in your home before placing Lord Shiva's idol.

Lord Shiva's sthapna should be done in the north-east direction of the house.

Water, milk, sugar, ghee, curd, honey, vastra, janeu, chandan, panchamrit,raw rice, flower, bel patra, datura, kamal gatta, prasad, bhang, laung, elaichi, dakshina and mewa are required for the puja.

Devotees who will keep fast should only eat the vrat food in the evening.

Sawan 2023: Don’ts

Devotees who will keep the fast must avoid garlic and onion.

Do not consume alcohol and non-vegetarian food in the month of Sawan.

Milk should not be consumed in the month of sawan.

Use of turmeric, ketki flower, tulsi leaves should not be used while worshipping Lord Shiva.
