Dry skin is more than an occasional nuisance; most of the time, it reflects an imbalance between skin hydration and barrier integrity. Many people struggle with dryness despite regular moisturising because they may not realise the deeper biology underlying deep skin hydration and barrier repair. Recently dermatologists have illustrated that merely using surface moisturisers is not enough; true skin health involves restoration of the very important lipid barrier to prevent moisture loss and environmental irritants. This approach of viewing skincare through a scientific lens provides a far better path toward long-term hydration and visibly healthier skin.

Understanding the skin's barrier and hydration process is key in the fight against persistent dryness. The skin barrier, comprising lipids and proteins, among others, acts as a barrier to moisture evaporation and aggressors from outside. When compromised through factors such as harsh weather conditions, ageing, or incorrectly formulated skincare products, the skin loses its ability to retain water deeply. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr Mahalakshmi Ravichandran, MBBS MDDVL, Zonal Medical Head Tamil Nadu Kolors Healthcare, shares the science behind deep hydration and barrier repair with dry skin.

Understanding The Deeper Layers

Healthy skin relies on a complex barrier made of fats, proteins, and natural moisturisers that retain water and protect from irritants. Dr Mahalakshmi Ravichandran stated, “Pollution, strong soaps, ageing and air conditioning intuitively disrupt this balance.” Over time, skin will lose moisture and its ability to hold it. You cannot just restore moisture if the barrier is damaged.

Instead of just focusing on the skin's surface, science now aims to fix the skin's structure. Treatments that boost collagen and elastin, two proteins that keep skin firm and flexible, can help skin bounce back naturally. Dr Mahalakshmi Ravichandran says, “New injectable hydrators, like Profhilo, put a lot of hyaluronic acid under the skin. This encourages the skin to rebuild itself and get better hydration.” These aren't fillers; instead, they focus on jump-starting natural processes to improve the skin's health over time.

Rethinking Skincare For Lasting Health

To get genuinely healthy skin, you have to work at it from several angles. Start by protecting the surface with gentle cleansers, applying creams that help fix your skin's barrier, and antioxidants. Then, think about in-office treatments to deal with structural problems deep down. Dr Mahalakshmi Ravichandran mentions, “Sticking to your routine is key. Even little things, like not exfoliating too much and drinking enough water, can enhance the skin’s natural ability to self-regulate.”

Dry skin has become more than just an appearance issue; now the focus is on the functioning of the skin’s ecosystem. While proper hydration is still essential, the ability to sustain improvements in the skin comes down to supporting its foundation. An advanced understanding of skin biology has yielded a modern dermatologic understanding of great skin: a balance of surface care, internal nourishment, and scientific development.
