With rising cases of lifestyle-related weight gain across the country, more and more expectant mothers are struggling with obesity during pregnancy. This not only affects their physical health but can also put the baby at risk of complications such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, preterm birth or cesarean delivery. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr Shweta Wazir, Senior Consultant - Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Gurgaon, shares the risks and tips for women to overcome the challenges of obesity in pregnancy and look forward to a healthy motherhood journey.

Obesity is commonly seen in children, adults, pregnant women, and even senior citizens. The cases are rising at an alarming rate across the country. Pregnancy is a new journey and a transformational phase for women. Did you know? Being overweight or obese and having a body mass index (BMI) over 30 can invite a plethora of health problems for mother and baby, which will demand timely attention. Dr Shweta Wazir states, “Various factors like sedentary lifestyles, stress, and poor dietary habits can make women pile up those excess kilos and steal their peace of mind.” The complications can be gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, high blood pressure, risk of cesarean delivery, preterm birth or miscarriage, excess fetal growth (macrosomia), birth defects, stress, anxiety, and depression. It is time for pregnant women to prioritise their health right away and get rid of that excess weight.

Pregnant Women Should Follow These Tips
Don’t miss the prenatal counselling. It is necessary to consult the doctor on time, get yourself evaluated, and seek obesity management based on the BMI. Moreover, exercise caution and don’t take any weight loss medication promoted on social media. Likewise, don’t try a crash or FAD diet on your own. Exercise only after consulting the doctor.

Dr Shweta Wazir states, “Pregnant women can also take the help of the support groups and speak to other women who have battled obesity and delivered healthy babies.” Learn from others' experiences and take charge of your health.
