What Is Heteropaternal Superfecundation?

It is a rare condition in which fertilisation of two or more egg cells from the same cycle by sperm from separate acts of sexual intercourse. This can lead to twin babies from two separate biological fathers.

The term heteropaternal means different fathers and superfecundation refers to successive fertilisation of two or more ova from the same ovulation, especially by different sires. These babies usually share the same mother but different fathers.

Usually, sperm cells can live inside a female body for up to five days and once the ovulation period begins, the egg remains viable for about 12-48 hours before disintegrating. Superfecundation generally occurs within hours or days of the first instance of fertilisation with egg cells released during the same cycle.

If an ovum is typically released after the female was already impregnated during previous ovulation. During this, a chance of a second pregnancy occurs, albeit at a different stage of development and is known as superfetation.

How Common Is Heteropaternal Superfecundation?

Heteropaternal Superfecundation is commonly noted in animals such as dogs and cats, although it is rare in humans.
