On World Diabetes Day 2025, the alarming growth in diabetes among today's youth is attracting serious attention as doctors flag a health crisis that is threatening not only the present generation but also the future one. Until now, considered an "adult disease," Type 2 diabetes is increasingly being diagnosed among adolescents and young adults-a trend linked to a complex web of genetics, lifestyle, diet, and environmental change. Along with urbanisation and technological advancement, the habits of the youth have changed drastically: sedentary routines, high-calorie processed foods, chronic stress, and disrupted sleep patterns have all become normal, hastening the onset of diabetes years earlier than previously observed.

Immediate attention is needed across India and worldwide, underlining not only early detection and better management of the disease but also comprehensive strategies for prevention, targeting the young population. Research points to the highest rates of diabetes coming among 15-19-year-olds. Childhood obesity, physical inactivity, and family history remain major triggers. Screen addiction and lack of time for outdoor activities increase vulnerability, while environmental factors such as pollution and spiralling stress add to the “perfect storm” that is driving this epidemic. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr. Manisha Arora, Director - Internal Medicine at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, shares the causes behind the surge of diabetes among the youth in recent times.

Causes Of Diabetes Surge In Younger Generation

Obesity

Excess weight, particularly around the abdomen, disrupts the body’s ability to use insulin effectively. Dr. Manisha Arora states, “This makes obese individuals more prone to developing Type 2 diabetes at a younger age.” The surge in obesity rates among youth is closely linked to unhealthy dietary patterns and lack of physical activity.

Unhealthy Diets And Convenience Foods

The modern diet is dominated by high-calorie, high-sugar, and high-fat foods, including fast food, packaged snacks, and sugary beverages. With both parents working in many households, families increasingly rely on ready-to-eat and convenience foods. While these save time, they often lack essential nutrients and promote weight gain, further raising diabetes risk.

Sedentary Lifestyle And Excess Screen Time

The digital era has led to reduced physical activity among young people. Dr. Manisha Arora mentions, “Prolonged screen time on TVs, computers, and mobile devices not only limits movement but also encourages mindless snacking.” This sedentary lifestyle contributes significantly to obesity and metabolic disorders.

Stress And Sleep Deprivation

Chronic stress, common among students and young professionals, increases the secretion of cortisol, a hormone that elevates blood sugar levels. Dr. Manisha Arora shares, “Another overlooked factor is poor sleep quality. Inadequate or fragmented sleep (less than 6–8 hours) affects glucose metabolism and appetite regulation, increasing the risk of diabetes.”
