World No Tobacco Day History
In the year 1987, World No Tobacco Day was created by the World Health Organization. It was officially observed on April 7, 1988, for the first time to mark the 40th anniversary of the WHO. On this day, the World Health Assembly passed Resolution WHA40.38 to call it "a world no-smoking day.” Later, Resolution WHA42.19 was passed, calling for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on May 31. The aim was to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and prevent smoking-related deaths. Over the decades, World No Tobacco Day has grown into a major event playing a key role in motivating people to stay away from tobacco.
World No Tobacco Day Significance
This day plays a key role in raising awareness among people about the potential health risks associated with tobacco use. This includes the risks with dangers of smoking and the use of tobacco products, including health issues like cancer, heart disease, stroke and respiratory illnesses.
World No Tobacco Day aims to raise awareness amid the global citizens about not only the dangers of using tobacco but also the business practices of tobacco companies, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations. On this day, individuals must pledge to quit tobacco, support tobacco control policies and spread awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco among their friends, family and communities.
