World Sparrow Day 2025: Every year, World Sparrow Day is celebrated on March 20 to mark the significance of these tiny birds and raise awareness about their dwindling populations. Until a few years ago, it was common to wake up to the chirping of sparrows in the neighbourhood. However, their numbers have drastically declined, making it a rare sight. This day aims to highlight the importance of conservation efforts to protect these tiny creatures and their habitats.

World Sparrow Day 2025 Theme
The theme for World Sparrow Day 2025 is 'A Tribute to Nature's Tiny Messengers' which highlights the crucial role sparrows play in maintaining ecological balance.
World Sparrow Day 2025: History
The day was first celebrated in 2010 by the Nature Forever Society of India and the Eco-Sys Action Foundation of France. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the decline of house sparrows and promote conservation efforts. Since then, various organisations in India have undertaken research to identify the causes of the decline and develop strategies for protection. A dedicated website has also been created to spread awareness and showcase a vast collection of sparrow images and information.
World Sparrow Day 2025: Significance
The day is observed annually to highlight the alarming decline of sparrow populations which are perilously close to extinction. The day unites individuals passionate about sparrows, promoting appreciation for their beauty. As urbanisation grows, house sparrows have vanished from backyards, emphasising the need for conservation and biodiversity efforts. The true purpose of World Sparrow Day is to inspire collective action, extending beyond a single-day celebration to drive meaningful change.
How To Celebrate?
Installing bird feeders is a thoughtful way to celebrate World Sparrow Day. Fill feeders with millet, oats or sunflower seeds and place them in areas where sparrows frequently come.
Creating nesting spaces is essential for sparrow conservation. Provide nesting boxes or plant native vegetation with dense foliage, allowing sparrows to build their nests safely.
Organise events, workshops or awareness programs to educate people about the importance of sparrow conservation. Share information on how to create sparrow-friendly habitats and promote community involvement.
