Significant reforms in drug distribution across government hospitals in Bihar have been made possible through the efforts of the Health Department. Under the new drug policy, 611 types of medicines are now being provided free of cost to patients in state-run hospitals.

The department claims that over the past two decades, the supply of medicines from government facilities has increased tenfold, positioning Bihar as a leading state in the country in terms of drug distribution.

According to department data, expenditure on medicine supply and distribution has also grown tenfold—from modest figures in earlier years to approximately Rs 762 crore in the financial year 2024–25. This amount is projected to rise to Rs 1,100 crore in 2025–26.

The department highlights that this transformation reflects a substantial improvement in healthcare services. Prior to 2005, essential medicines were largely unavailable in hospitals. However, following policy reforms post-2005, even life-saving drugs have become accessible, significantly reducing the financial burden on economically weaker patients.
