A woman is battling for her life after an alleged acid attack by her husband and in-laws in Bhagalpur district of Bihar, police said.

According to the Jagran.com, the incident took place in Tahbalpur village under the Lodipur police station limits, where Muhammad Jalal, along with his father and brother, allegedly assaulted his wife, Rukhsana Khatun, and forced her to consume acid. Rukhsana was initially admitted to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital (JLNMCH) in critical condition and later referred to Patna for advanced treatment.

The matter came to light after the couple’s 10-year-old daughter informed the police, stating that her father, grandfather, and uncle jointly attacked her mother. However, Jalal, who works as a court clerk, has denied the allegations, terming them false.

Rukhsana’s mother has accused her son-in-law and his family of sustained dowry harassment since the marriage. She alleged that the in-laws were unhappy over the birth of Rukhsana’s two daughters and had repeatedly pressured her to sell the children. When she refused, they allegedly attempted to kill her.

Police have launched an investigation into the case.

In a separate incident, The SIT investigating the death of a NEET aspirant in a girls’ hostel at Chitragupt Nagar has traced the sleeping pills she consumed back to a medical store in Jehanabad. Using the batch number, the team identified the distributor and narrowed down which stores received that batch. 

The shopkeeper confirmed that six strips were purchased online on December 27, and identified the buyer from photographs shown by police. Authorities are now close to uncovering how the medicine reached the student, though one link in the chain remains under investigation.

Meanwhile, questions about why she took the pills remain unresolved. Her travel history shows she went from Patna to Jehanabad with her family on December 27 and returned by train on January 5.

Searches related to suicide and sleeping pills were found on her phone from December 24 and January 5. She was found unconscious the next day and treated in a private hospital until January 10. The SIT is examining her hospital records, mobile phone, CCTV footage, and a recovered diary to piece together the critical timeline between December 24 and January 5, while also probing her contacts and the treatment she received.
